question 1
in what ways does your media product use, develop or change forms of conventions of real media products?
Using Conventions within our trailer
Number 1:
Moving into a new house is fairly common within horrors, especially in films from the 21st century. We used this convention to reflect a modern day family of a single mum moving into a new house with her son. Plus the reason they are moving into a new house is due to being on Witness Protection, which is becoming more excitant now a days. We took inspiration from horrors such as 'Sinister' and 'The Conjuring'
Number 2:
Locking the door is usually seen to be a convention that will make you feel safe, however on the other hand can be seen in films to be the reverse, so you are locking the "Bad" into the same place with you.
Number 3:
Filming in the basement/attic has become more popular as they are seen to be a place within a house that is hardly ever used, so therefore is dark, dusty and can be seen as entering the unknown.
Number 4:
Hands creeping through a door/gap is creepy within itself as it is unknown of who it actually is. This is a convention that is used many times within horror as it is a great way of showing someone is trapped or trying to escape.
Number 5:
Masks have appeared in many horrors, and have continued to be effective over a number of years. It's a convention which is used to cover and hide someones identity creating mystery and secrets.
Number 6:
Blood is a big iconic convention within the horror genre, showing that someone has been injured and is in pain. We decided to use this convention within our trailer to clearly display our horror genre.

Challenging conventions within our trailer
Number 1:
We are challenging conventions by incorporating the Witness Protection Program. By using this convention it plays with the audience as they are lead to believe that the program will protect Tom, however is reversed.
Number 2:
By incorporating a video diary we are challenging conventions as it is rarely seen within horrors. By using this feature it clearly showed the difference between time, and added commentary to help set the storyline.

Our poster- The black background relates to horror as it is a common colour used, which often relates to the darkness of the night and into the unknown.
- Cracks in the title represent the old age which appears within our trailer and decay - Dark tone on the mask shows its mysterious and creates enigmas through out the audience making them ask, who and what is the mask? |
our Magazine cover- The use of the colour red relates to horror and blood. However we chose to use a brighter tone as it's a magazine cover and will therefore become eye catching and bold for the audience to notice.
- The cracks used in the background, relate back to our poster title. They help add to the horror genre and creates a decayed affect. - The cuts on the title font "Pixel" also relate back to the horror genre - James in black and white relates to his character being from the past, and clearly shows the difference between time in comparison to Tom. |
